Lancia Stratos

Lancia StratosBertone exhibited a prototype at the 1970 Torino Motor Show. This concept designed by Marcello Gandidni, caught the eye of Lancia who at the time were looking for a replacement to the Fulvia rally machine. In 1972, the Lancia Stratos was unveiled as the successor.

Design.
The Lancia Stratos is known for its extremely short wheel base. This made for fantastic steering sharpness but also nightmarish unforgiveness.

Performance.
The engine was taken from the Ferrari Dino 246GT. It is a 2.4L DOHC V6 that produced 185 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque. The Lancia Stratos weighted only 980 kg.

Legacy.
The Lancia Stratos won its first official competition at the Saremo WRC. From 1974 to 1976, the Stratos won three consecutive constructors’ titles. Lancia produced 500 road cars for homologation purposes through 1978.
